NUBA Wise Wallet: A Financial Management System for Alzheimer's Patients and Caregivers
Design Challenge
Through research and personal experience, we identified a few opportunities to give an Alzheimer’s patient a better quality of life.
1. First, stage 1 of 3 (mild) of Alzheimer’s disease experience difficulty managing money, losing or misplacing things, and other symptoms in addition to the ones listed. Elderly patients often get taken advantage or simply lose or misplace their money.
2. Second, caregivers to Alzheimer’s patients are mostly family members. This informal care can cost time and money. This adds as a stressor in addition to having a family member suffer from the disease.
3. And finally, since most of the care the patients receive is informal care, there could be a lot of frustration from both sides. This healthcare product aim to alleviate some frustration to give the patient and their caregiver a chance to have a better relationship.
From these observations, we developed a design challenge:
HOW MIGHT CAREGIVERS PROVIDE BETTER CARE TO ALZHEIMER’S PATIENTS THROUGH UNDERSTANDING AND AT THE SAME TIME, MAINTAINING THE PATINET’S PERSONAL INDEPENDENCE?
Product Design
The initial process of designing a wallet for an Alzheimer’s patient is to think of ways to keep everything as close to the original function as possible. Alzheimer’s patients tend to do things out of habit and changing that can create more problems than solutions. We decided that the button to open the wallet will be thumb print scanned. The wallet will feature a screen for display and speaker in-case of getting lost with or without the owner. The interior consists of panels with scanning technology to track cash going in and out of the wallet.
